Apple Deepens Its Semi-Conductor Talent Pool

By Jack Fitchner | Apr 30, 2009

Apple acquired Palo Alto Semi-conductor last year, a microchip design firm that boasted some impressive talent and experience. Now they picked up Bob Drebin and Raja Koduri, both former chief technology officers with Advanced Micro Design’s graphic products group.
Many analysts predict Apple is designing its own chips for future iPhones or other low-powered computing devices.  [...]

According to research group iSuppli, the Palm Pre smartphone costs an estimated $170.02 to produce.  If you’re curious as to how those numbers were reached, here’s a quick breakdown:

There are, of course, other factors that go into a product’s final cost, such as shipping, marketing and so on – [...]

Verizon expands into Sunapee, NH – ever heard of it?

By Shawn Farner | Apr 30, 2009

My favorite kind of press release is the self-congratulatory, pat-yourself-on-the-back kind.  Verizon Wireless seems to be putting these out daily, touting their network expansions into places like the Hundred Acre Wood, Hyrule Field and Sunapee, New Hampshire.
The interesting thing about Sunapee, New Hampshire (besides it being the only real life location on that list) is [...]

By Brandon Hood | Apr 30, 2009

Today is the first day that Verizon’s revamped global version of their GPS navigation system is available.  So now you can take comfort in the fact that, even on the other side of the ocean, you have instant access to the most roundabout and indirect set of directions possible.  No word yet as to whether [...]

Flip Video marches out new Flip Ultra and Flip UltraHD

By Shawn Farner | Apr 30, 2009

If you aren’t familiar with the Flip video cameras, I’ll try to sum them up in a few words – small, convenient, easy and powerful.  The Flips have become mainstays in the web video community due to their ease of use and travel-friendly size.  Recording a video is a point-and-shoot affair and uploading to the [...]

Mophie Juice Pack extends your iPhone’s battery life

By Shawn Farner | Apr 30, 2009

Last week, I wrote a post about why I converted to the iPhone.  Reader Stuart Singer commented on the post and talked about how he was able to carry a spare battery for his Motorola E815, something that didn’t appear possible with the iPhone.  Of course, it’s very possible to extend your iPhone’s battery life [...]

WiFi-detecting ball point pen

By Shawn Farner | Apr 29, 2009

I’m a sucker for cool USB gadgets and this pen is no exception.  From a distance, this might seem like the kind of pen someone (me, for instance) might use when writing things down that never involve girls and phone numbers.  Upon closer inspection, however, you’ll notice a tiny button and four LEDs.  This pen [...]

Penguin turns normal water into sparkling water.

By Jack Fitchner | Apr 29, 2009

This amazingly little penguin can take a carafe of normal still water and convert it to sparkling water in about 10 seconds.  At the heart of the system is a 14.2 ounce CO2 cartridge.  The cartridges run about $15 each and should give you about 60 carafes worth of sparkling water.
This could be a smooth [...]

A Giant Gas Can

By Jack Fitchner | Apr 29, 2009

Why should multinational corporations and governments be the only ones with Fuel Reserves.  Thanks to our friends over at Hammacher Schlemmer you can create a mini oil reserve for yourself, 14 gallons at a time.
What could go wrong?

Neckpro Traction Device is ridiculous, awesome

By Jack Fitchner | Apr 29, 2009

Part of me wants to ridicule this product ruthlessly, but the other part of me wants to whip out my credit card and buy this contraption with overnight shipping.  I never realized how compressed my neck feels, until I saw the picture on the left.  Now all I can think about is the relief that [...]
