According to a press release put out yesterday, AT&T is willing to pay up to take a bite out of crime.  How much?  $100,000.

The reward is for information leading to the arrest of vandals who cut fiber cables in San Jose and San Carlos, California.  The ensuing outage knocked out emergency service communications, Internet data connections, cell phone coverage and much more.  The outage certainly put a spotlight on society’s reliance on technology and telecommunications.

Because of this reliance and the importance of the AT&T’s networks to national security, the networks are considered by the federal government to be “National Critical Infrastructures”.  Translation: if you mess with them, you’re in serious trouble.  Vandalizing such a network means you aren’t just dealing with the local police – you’re dealing with the Feds.

P.S. If you helped someone cut the cables, now’s your chance to turn them in and make $100,000.
