Facebook Finally Linked to Lower Grades?

By Kris Gochenour | Saturday, April 18, 2009

Are you one of the hundreds of thousands of members of the popular Facebook group I Should Be Studying But I Ended Up on Facebook?  A recent study found that ”college students who use Facebook spend less time hitting the books and get lower grades” than non-Facebooking counterparts.

The study, conducted at the Ohio State University, surveyed 219 undergraduate and graduate students and their GPAs, study habits, and extracurricular activities.  Of the 219 students surveyed, the Facebook users registered GPAs averaging 3.0 to 3.5, while the non-Facebookers had an average GPA between 3.5 and 4.0.

Furthermore, the study found a discrepancy between the amount of hours the students spent studying each week.  The students who used Facebook spend an average of 1 to 5 hours studying a week, while those who do not use  Facebook spent 11 to 15 hours per week.

The study also concluded that students majoring in science, technology, math and business were more likely to use Facebook than those students in social science and liberal arts majors.
