According to USA Today, Apple and Verizon are reportedly engaging in “high-level” talks about bringing the iPhone to Verizon’s network. It is rumored that, at this stage in the game, iPhones could be seen on Verizon as early as next year. Before you cancel your wireless plan and switch to Verizon, though, don’t count out AT&T.
If this turns out to be true, AT&T will likely go to war to keep their exclusivity agreement with Apple in place. New iPhone users were half of AT&T’s new subscribers last quarter and, if AT&T loses the iPhone as an exclusive, their number of new subscribers would undoubtedly take a hit.
Here’s another interesting question – would Verizon cripple certain features on the iPhone? Verizon has a long history of locking certain phone features. My BlackBerry Pearl’s GPS unit was locked. Why? Probably so Verizon could sell more subscriptions to VZ Navigator. It’s a legitimate concern and I hope that, if Verizon does end up with the iPhone, they let the device do what it’s supposed to.
