Everyone else was having headline fun – why can’t I?
According to Nielsen Online, most Twitter users (60%) quit the service a month after joining. Twitter’s retention rate currently sits at an ridiculously low 20%. For a bit of perspective, Facebook and Myspace both average around 70% retention. Twitter seems to be highly addictive to those who use it regularly, but for everyone else, the service just isn’t sticky enough.
Twitter needs to solve this problem. The service has been hyped up for quite some time but, lately, the hubub seems to be at an all-time high. If they hope to reach the Facebook/Myspace tier, they need to ride the current wave of momentum and convert more first-timers into regulars. This growth is not sustainable with a 20% retention rate.
On the bright side: the Fail Whale would feel right at home with a crashing wave.
