If you’re looking forward to the Palm Pre, Collins Stewart analyst Ashok Kumar has come to rain on your parade – he forsees the smartphone’s launch as being nothing short of a “disappointment”. Multiple factors contribute to Kumar’s prediction, none of which were psychics, crystal balls or tarot cards. Instead, Kumar believes that hardware and software issues will doom the Pre to mediocrity:
Kumar says “multiple hardware and software issues” have forced Palm’s hand here and that he doesn’t expect the company to meet its expected goal of one million units shipped in the second half of 2009. He even goes so far as to describe that figure as “highly unrealistic.”
Analysts have been wrong before, so I’m in no hurry to jump on this bandwagon. Palm has made solid devices for years and the new WebOS system is a huge step in the right direction. I’m not going to throw stones until the phone has officially launched and Sprint’s network is on duty.
