Three iPhone games and their real-life counterparts

iPhone GamesWhile there are a lot of great iPhone games in the App Store, many of which are free, part of me yearns to play some of my favorite, real life games.  Unfortunately, life gets in the way, and so does the availability of certain games.  Luckily, some clever iPhone App developers have filled the void by bringing some of these real life games to what is arguably the hottest mobile gaming platform.

I could build this list up all day, but why keep you waiting?  Here we go.

1.  BlackOut: Lights Off (real life: Lights Out)Lights Out

BlackOut: Lights OffLights Out was an addicting puzzle game made by Tiger Electronics.  The object of the game was to turn out all the lights.  Sounds easy, right?  Here’s the catch – every time you touch a light, that light and the lights above, below and beside that light turn off.  If you touch a light that’s off, that light as well as the lights above, below and beside that light turn on.  There are some very challenging puzzles that will keep you guessing for hours.

Developer GrunewaldDev must have seen the need for a game like this and created BlackOut: Lights Off.  The game seems to do Lights Out justice on Apple’s smartphone and will only set you back 99 cents.

Paper Football2.  Football (real life: Paper Football)

FootballI have fond memories of playing paper football when I shouldn’t have, particularly during class.  Regardless, it was a fun distraction and a cheap form of entertainment.  Who doesn’t have paper laying around?  Unfortunately, it’s a little difficult to find someone who’s willing to play paper football with you, especially when you’re 24 years old.  Luckily, iPhone developer Jirbo saw this gaping need and developed Football.

The premise is the same as paper football – you use your finger to push the football across a table (or in Jirbo’s case, a field) and try to place the football on the goalline without going past.  If you’re successful, you’re awarded six points and an extra point try.  Just like in paper football, you use your finger to flick the ball through the goalposts.  There are actual goalposts in the game, not someone holding up their fingers.  What a relief – how many of you were hit in the face with paper footballs on extra point tries?  I was.

Football by Jirbo is totally free – download it!

Air Hockey3.  Touch Hockey: FS5 (real life: Air Hockey)

Touch Hockey: FS5Ah, yes – air hockey.  This is easily one of my favorite games of all time.  I know I’ll probably lose some gamer cred for this, but while other people in the arcade are mashing their Tekken buttons and slamming their gas pedals in Crusin’ Whatever, I’m playing air hockey.  Unfortunately for this awesome game, it’s showing up less and less in arcades (which are vanishing, themselves).  Fortunately for iPhone owners, the air hockey experience is replicated by Touch Hockey: FS5.

FlipSide5 really went all out for this game, allowing you to do all the things you can do in real-life air hockey – the physics are top notch, and you’re able to trap the puck underneath your paddle.  You can play against the computer, but better yet – you can play a friend via WiFi.  The game hums along at 60 frames per second whether you’re playing the computer or playing a network game.

This game has both a free version and a paid version.  The free version forces you to deal with some advertising, but it’s not that much of a pain.  The paid version will cost you $1.99.

Well, there you have it.  Go try these games out and let us know what you think!  Do you have some favorite real-lifers of your own that have made it onto the iPhone?  Beer pong, perhaps?  Let us know in the comments!
