BlackBerry CurveResearch In Motion spent a lot of time and money building the BlackBerry Storm, a smartphone they believed could earn the coveted “iPhone Killer” title.  The BlackBerry Storm was a disappointment, but RIM can’t be too disappointed anymore.  As it turns out, they already have an iPhone killer in the lineup.

It’s called the BlackBerry Curve.

Research released today by NPD Group shows that the Curve has now overtaken the iPhone as the best-selling smartphone in the United States.  Apple’s iPhone now sits in the number two spot, followed by RIM’s BlackBerry Storm and BlackBerry Pearl at third and fourth, respectively.  The fifth spot is occupied by the T-Mobile G1, which runs on Google’s Android platform.

Credit for the Curve’s comeback is mainly given to Verizon Wireless.  The wireless provider ran a “buy one, get one free” promotion for BlackBerry devices.  The BlackBerry phones also benefit from being on multiple services – the iPhone is available only from AT&T.
