Craigslist will shut down ‘erotic services’

Craigslist Erotic ServicesWhile this is not quite gadget news, I couldn’t resist writing about it.  Craigslist has reportedly agreed to shut down the ‘erotic services’ section of its popular web site, a move that will undoubtedly anger “massage” specialists and women in French maid costumes.

The decision comes after the “Craigslist Killer” incident put the section under a worldwide spotlight.  Craigslist was then put on the defensive as the Connecticut Attorney General’s Office scrutinized the ‘erotic services’ being offered.  In a statement, Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal referred to the section as “a blatant Internet brothel”.

If you were a regular browser or poster in ‘Erotic Services’ (for whatever reason), fear not – craigslist will soon replace the section with another section called ‘Adult Services’.  This will ensure that nude midget models can still find work during the recession.  The ads placed on the service will be manually reviewed to keep the site free of prostitution and pornography, things you can’t find anywhere else on the Internet.

This change in policy will do very little to change the way that consenting adults hook up on the internet, it will simply change the website people use to do so. As Craigslist has placed increasing barriers like fees and restrictions for those wishing to post in their erotic section, competing sites in the space like Naughty Reviews, which offers free classified ads, have grown significantly. My point is that law enforcement is simply wasting resources with this current campaign as stopping the world’s oldest profession is just not possible in today’s day and age.

Waste of time, but not a big deal, there are better sites like eros and http://www.tnareview.com that are better anyways.
