We reported on July that Barnes & Noble to Revamp their business with a online book store and Plastic Logic’s Super Thin e-Book Reader. And we all thought that is pretty much it.
But yesterday, we read a blog post on WIRED that Barnes & Noble will also be partnering with iRex, a Netherlands-based company in particular on iRex 8.1-inch touch screen e-reader that also comes with a stylus-based navigation and 3G wireless connectivity.
According to the Wired report, Barnes & Noble hopes to expand its reach with iRex,a spin-off from Royal Phillips Electronics. The company’s name stands for ‘Interactive Reading Experience.
We are yet to determine the price point of iRex ebook reader. Seems that now, we will be having more choices for an ebook gadget. What will be your choice? Will it be an Amazon Kindle DX, a Sony Reader, Plastic Logic or an Irex?

I currently use a Kindle 2 and will probably stay with that platform (or the DX) rather than experiment with all these new options coming to the market. It has taken the Kindle two years to refine its features and I don’t want to be another company’s ‘guinea pig’ at my expense. Yes, there are additional features that are needed on the Kindle, and the touch screen sounds nice, but will it enhance the reading experience. What is really needed is a color, 256-bit graphic screen that can display photos. My Kindle 2 can display some basic graphics, but I find that none of my photography books work on it satisfactorily, because photography is, by nature, a visual experience and none of the eBook readers are now ‘tuned’ into that experience.
