A fake Microsoft portable game systemBefore you get too excited, no, that picture to the left is not the official Microsoft handheld.  It’s just a mockup/fake we found online.  But it looks cool, doesn’t it?  Imagine if Microsoft were really entering the handheld gaming market!  Well, they might be.

According to a post from Team Xbox, Microsoft is in the late stages of building a “digital entertainment handheld”.  The device has been tagged with the “xYz” codename; the Y is likely being capitalized to emphasize that this new handheld is the lovechild of the Xbox (x) and the Zune (z).  The source providing the information from within Microsoft stated:

“When this handheld arrives, people will say it is Microsoft’s response to the iPhone, the Nintendo DS, the PSP, and so on, but it will be pretty evident that this device, its software, and services have been in the works for a very long time.”

This is a very interesting development and we’re definitely going to keep our eyes peeled and ears to the ground on this one.  In the meantime, go read the rest of the article from Team Xbox – there’s a lot more for you to learn.

Portable NES system from ThinkGeek plays actual game cartridges

Portable NESNever before have I wanted something so badly.  I would toss my iPhone aside in a heartbeat for a chance to play Kid Icarus, Ice Hockey and Tecmo Super Bowl while on the go.  And now, for the reasonable price of $49.95, I can do just that.

The Retro Mini Handheld runs on 4 AA batteries and will play your original NES cartridges (for those of you that still have them).  You can play on the Mini itself or use a AV-out cable to plug the device into your TV.  If I could add one thing to the Mini, it would be a second controller port – why be forced to play alone?

If you’re interested in picking one of these bad boys up, head on over to ThinkGeek and get your credit card ready.
