The big news are in: Google is halting any development of the Wave platform, the end of Google Wave is here. Wave made its official debut in May of 2009 at Google I/O, the yearly developer’s conference. Wave promised real-time communication like never seen before, users could communicate and see each others messages almost immediately (e.g. the typing of the message could be seen in real-time on the other end).
Wave excited developers all over the world, suddenly the possibilities of direct collaboration, development, communication and much more were at the fingertips of whoever was lucky enough to receive a beta invite.
Yet Google states that Wave’s downfall emerged on the basis of slow user integration, a steep learning curve and, surprisingly, no direct use for the tool. Many struggled to integrate Wave into their daily life. The technology allowed one, for example, to share, manipulate and collaborate on photos with ease. Yet many found it to be somewhat excessive. There are several web apps to that for you already. The bottom line is, Wave over delivered.
It was crowded with all kinds of information and in-built apps. From chat to direct media tools… It proved to be overwhelming.
With this we say, RIP Wave… Maybe in another life…
