DVDs remain dominant over digital downloads 1

In the war between video downloads and DVDs, the tried-and-true DVD is winning.  I have to ask – is anyone surprised by that?

According to NPD Group, DVD sales and rentals account for 88% of consumer video purchases.  Video on demand and digital downloads are hovering somewhere around 12%.  There’s an obvious divide between digital media and physical media – either more people have the means to watch DVDs than download content, they feel more comfortable watching DVDs or both.

Is Apple readying a video streaming service? 1

Apple Insider are reporting that Apple could be putting the finishing touches on a video streaming service.  This service would likely debut with iTunes 8, the next installment of the company’s media player/organizer.

Why is this important?  For starters, it forces Amazon and Netflix to pay close attention.  Both companies offer streaming  video to customers.  Apple’s entry into the market would certainly put a dent in the market shares of both.  It could also make the Apple TV, iPhone and iPod Touch much more useful.  None of the devices are particularly beefy on  hard drive space – the ability to stream … Read the rest
